Is SEO Dead? AEO vs. SEO and Why Ranking on Google Isn't Enough Anymore

SEO isn't dead, but ranking on Google no longer guarantees customers find you. Here's how AEO differs from SEO and what to do about it.

Is SEO dead?

No — but the version of SEO most businesses pay for is. Blogging for keywords, buying links and waiting months for rankings no longer guarantees customers find you, because more and more of them get their answer from an AI assistant without clicking any link. SEO is now the foundation; answer engine optimization (AEO) is what gets you named.

What's the actual difference between AEO and SEO?

What builds authorityBacklinksThird-party mentions, reviews, consistent facts

Why is ranking on Google no longer enough?

Because the click is disappearing. When Google shows an AI Overview at the top of the page, far fewer people scroll to the organic results beneath it. One 2026 study of 300,000 keywords found click-through rates for the number-one position fell by more than half.

And Google is no longer the only door. ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Claude each draw on different sources. A business can rank first on Google and be completely absent from ChatGPT's answer to the same question.

Why do so many SEO programs underdeliver?

Many businesses are paying for the shallow end of SEO: page titles, a few blog posts, and a monthly rankings report. The deeper work — structured data, genuinely useful content, public relations, and getting cited by trusted third parties — is often skipped because it's harder and slower to do.

That deeper work is exactly what AI engines reward. In many ways, AEO is simply SEO done properly.

Do you still need SEO?

Yes. A fast, mobile-friendly, secure website with clear structure remains the price of admission. AI engines still need to crawl and understand your site. Think of it this way: SEO makes you findable; AEO makes you the recommendation.

What should you do differently starting this month?

  1. Stop measuring success by keyword rankings alone. Ask whether AI names you for the questions that matter.
  2. Replace broad keyword targets with specific customer questions.
  3. Publish unique knowledge — your expertise, your data, your answers — rather than rewritten generic content.
  4. Get talked about by credible third parties, not just linked to.
  5. Track where new leads actually come from, including AI assistants.

Frequently asked questions

Will SEO agencies start offering AEO?

Many already are rebranding their services. Ask what has changed in the actual work, not just the name.

Is AI traffic big enough to matter yet?

AI referrals are still a small share of total web traffic, but they're growing quickly and tend to convert far better than ordinary search visitors.

Can I do AEO without a new website?

Usually, yes. Most of the work is content, structure and reputation, not a redesign.
