What is answer engine optimization?
Answer engine optimization (AEO) is the work of getting your business selected, quoted and credited inside an AI-generated answer — in ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Claude or Google's AI Overviews — instead of simply ranking as one link among ten. When a prospect asks an AI assistant a question, AEO determines whether your name is in the answer.
Why does AEO matter now?
Because your customers have changed how they search. They no longer type "dentist Las Vegas" and click five websites. They ask a full question — "Which dentist near Summerlin is open Saturdays and takes my insurance?" — and get one answer back.
The result is a no-click world. Industry studies in 2026 report click-through drops of 30% to 40% in many industries, with medical and professional services among the hardest hit. In one survey of 68,000 searches, only 8% of users clicked a traditional result when an AI Overview appeared.
That sounds alarming, but there's a silver lining. The people who do click through after researching inside an AI assistant arrive pre-qualified. Practitioners report these visitors convert at several times the rate of ordinary web traffic, because the AI has already answered their early questions.
What has to happen before AI will recommend you?
Four things, in order. Think of them as gates:
- Access — AI crawlers must be able to reach your website. Some firewall and bot-protection settings block them by default.
- Retrieval — your content must surface when the question is asked, which means it has to address the question someone actually asks.
- Extraction — the AI must be able to pull a clean answer off your page. Clear headings, answers near the top, and structured data (schema) make this possible.
- Trust — the answer must be believable enough to cite. That comes from reviews, consistent business information, and other credible sites talking about you.
Fail any one gate and nothing after it matters.
Is AEO just SEO with a new name?
No. Traditional SEO tried to rank a page for a keyword. AEO tries to make your business the answer to a specific question. That shift changes what you publish, where you publish it, and how you measure success. Good SEO hygiene still matters — AEO builds on it — but rankings reports alone no longer tell you whether customers can find you.
What kind of content do AI engines want?
Unique knowledge. AI engines are actively filtering out recycled, AI-generated filler — often called "AI slop" — because it adds nothing new. What they want is what's in your head: the questions your front desk answers every day, the outcomes you've seen, the details only someone in your business would know.
An exact answer beats a general one. "Do you offer same-day crowns in Henderson?" is a question you can own. "Best dentist" is not.
Should you build your strategy on one platform?
No. In September 2025, the share of ChatGPT answers citing Reddit reportedly fell from roughly 60% to about 10% in a matter of weeks. Businesses that had bet everything on one platform saw their visibility vanish overnight. Spread your presence across your website, video, professional networks, review sites and local directories.
Frequently asked questions
Is AEO the same as GEO?
GEO (generative engine optimization) is often used interchangeably. We treat it as part of AEO: the work that gets your content into AI-generated answers.
How long does AEO take?
Citations have been observed in as little as 48 hours for highly specific content, but 30 to 60 days is more realistic, with meaningful market position typically taking four to six months. No one can guarantee placement.
Does my business need AEO if I already rank well on Google?
Yes. Ranking on Google and being recommended by ChatGPT are different outcomes drawing on different sources.
