Field notes · Answer Engine Optimization
Answer Engine Optimization: be the source, not the link.
AEO is optimizing to be the source an answer engine quotes rather than a link a user has to click. It grew out of voice search and featured snippets. Today it covers AI Overviews and assistant answers — and it changes what you can measure.
The click is no longer the unit
Fewer searches end in a visit to a website every year. If your entire reporting model is sessions, you will watch a channel look like it is dying while it is quietly doing its job — being the answer.
That means three practical changes:
- Write answers, not padding. A clear, self-contained response to a real question, near the top of the page, in plain language.
- Make claims quotable. Specific numbers, named sources, dates. Engines prefer sources that commit.
- Measure citations and mentions alongside traffic — share of answers, not just share of clicks.
What AEO does not mean
It does not mean abandoning SEO. Local pack and organic still produce most of the trackable traffic for local service businesses, and the underlying signals overlap heavily. Anyone telling you to drop SEO for AEO is selling you a rebrand.
Where the content lives matters
Answer engines read served HTML. A page whose copy is assembled in the browser can be invisible to the crawlers that feed those answers. Server-rendered content is not an optimization detail here; it is the entry ticket.
