Do ChatGPT and Google AI use the same sources?
No. A 2026 study by GEOforge, analyzing more than 10.2 million citation events across 848 tracked prompts, found that Google's AI features and ChatGPT pull from noticeably different corners of the web. Google's AI cites YouTube heavily. ChatGPT almost never does — and leans on LinkedIn instead. If you publish in only one place, you're visible in only one assistant.
What did the study find?
Social platforms made up about 8.8% of all citations — a minority, but a meaningful one. The split between engines was striking:
| Platform | Google AI Overviews | Google AI Mode | ChatGPT |
|---|---|---|---|
| YouTube | ~6.6% | ~6.3% | ~0.004% |
| ~1.5% | ~1.5% | ~0.2% | |
| ~2.1% | ~1.8% | ~0.09% |
Out of more than a million ChatGPT citations, only about 42 pointed to YouTube videos. Google owns YouTube and features it prominently; ChatGPT appears to keep its distance.

Does social media engagement get you cited?
Less than you'd think. Engagement looks like a threshold, not a ladder. Once a YouTube video passed roughly 1,000 views, more views didn't meaningfully raise its citation rate. Nearly half of the cited YouTube videos had fewer than 1,000 views.
On LinkedIn, about 60% of the articles ChatGPT cited had fewer than 50 likes or comments. Many were picked up 35 days or more after publishing — long after the post had "died" in the feed.
The lesson: you don't need to go viral. You need to publish genuinely useful, specific answers consistently.
What should a local business do with this?
- Answer the same question in more than one format. Record a short video answering a common customer question for YouTube, then publish the written version on your website and as a LinkedIn article.
- Match the question closely. A video titled with the exact question your patients or clients ask has a better shot at being cited than a general overview.
- Don't chase likes. Consistency and specificity outperform a single viral hit.
- Be patient on LinkedIn. Articles can earn citations weeks after they stop getting engagement.
Why are the AI platforms so different?
Each company is protecting its own data. Google draws from its search index and YouTube; OpenAI builds its own sources; Meta has its own data across its apps. The days of "one search engine, one set of rules" are over, and the businesses that spread their knowledge across several platforms will be the ones named everywhere.
Frequently asked questions
Should I stop posting on Reddit?
Don't build your strategy on any single platform. Reddit's share of ChatGPT citations reportedly collapsed in late 2025.
Is YouTube worth it if ChatGPT ignores it?
Yes. YouTube remains one of the strongest routes into Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode.
Do I need a big following to be cited?
No. Most cited content in the study came from modest accounts with specific, useful answers.
