Why does consistent business information matter for AI?
Because AI engines are built to avoid being wrong. When they find two different versions of a fact about your business — an old address, a former name, a discontinued service — they can't tell which is true, so they often cite neither. Consistency across every listing is one of the least glamorous and most effective things you can do for AI visibility.
Where do inconsistencies usually hide?
Almost every business has at least one. The common culprits:
- An old address or suite number on a directory you forgot about
- A previous business name after a rebrand, merger or ownership change
- A former doctor, attorney or team member still listed on your website
- Services you stopped offering years ago
- A phone number that changed when you switched providers
- Different hours on Google, Yelp and your website
- A social profile that describes your business slightly differently than your website does
Each one is a small crack. Together they tell an AI engine your information can't be trusted.
Which listings should you audit?
Start with these, and make every one identical — name, address, phone, website, hours and description:
- Your own website (every page, including the footer and contact page)
- Google Business Profile
- Apple Business Connect and Bing Places
- Yelp, Facebook and Instagram
- Industry directories (Healthgrades, Zocdoc and the ADA's Find-a-Dentist for dental; Avvo, Justia and the state bar for law; Angi and the BBB for home services)
- Your state Secretary of State business filing and any professional licensing board
- Chamber of commerce and local association listings
A single day is usually enough to find the problems. Fix what you control, then request corrections from the sites you don't.
What is a brand entity, and why does it matter?
A brand entity is how AI understands your business as a single, real thing: who you are, where you are, when you were founded, who works there, and what you're known for. The clearer and more consistent that picture, the more confidently AI can recommend you.
You strengthen it by:
- Publishing real people. Give each doctor, attorney or specialist a bio page with credentials, specialties and experience.
- Adding structured data. Organization, LocalBusiness and Person schema tell machines exactly who you are without guesswork. Make sure it's current — schema listing staff who left years ago sends the wrong signal.
- Getting corroborated. Trade associations, local press, podcasts and partner websites that describe you the same way confirm the facts.
What does a good review have to do with it?
Reviews are part of your entity too. A review that names the service and location ("Maria handled our water heater replacement in Henderson the same day") reinforces exactly what you want AI to know about you.
Frequently asked questions
How often should I audit my listings?
At least twice a year, and immediately after any move, rebrand, phone change or staff change.
Does schema alone get me recommended?
No. Schema describes your content; it doesn't replace it. It makes accurate information easy for machines to read.
What if a directory won't update my old listing?
Document your request and keep following up. Meanwhile, make sure the authoritative sources — your website and major profiles — are correct.
