Why does my business show up in Google Maps but not in ChatGPT?
Because Google Maps and ChatGPT draw on different data. Your Google Business Profile feeds Google's map pack and AI Overviews, but ChatGPT doesn't lean on it the same way. One U.S.-weighted study of 350,000 locations across 2,700 multi-location brands found that about 36% appeared in Google's local map pack — but only about 1.2% were recommended by ChatGPT.
What does that gap mean for local businesses?
It means local AI search is wide open. Most businesses have spent years building their Google presence and haven't touched AI visibility at all. Whoever gets there first in a given neighborhood and specialty has a real head start.
Think about how patients and clients now ask: "Who's an emergency dentist open right now near Henderson?" or "Which personal injury lawyer in Las Vegas speaks Spanish?" Those are spoken, specific, local questions — and the assistant often gives just one or two names.
How do you become visible in local AI answers?
- Keep your Google Business Profile active. Post updates, photos and short articles regularly. Very few businesses do this, and Google uses it.
- Build real location pages. Not a list of ZIP codes — pages that answer local questions: parking, hours, neighborhoods served, the services offered at that location.
- Answer local questions explicitly. "Do you offer same-day emergency appointments in Summerlin?" should be answered on your website in plain words.
- Get listed where locals look. Chambers of commerce, local business associations, community sites, and industry directories have been trusted for years. Make sure you're in them, and that the listings are accurate.
- Make your reviews describe the service. A review that says "Dr. Patel fixed my cracked molar the same afternoon" tells AI what you do and where. "Great job!" tells it nothing.
Why does consistency matter so much locally?
Because AI won't recommend what it can't verify. If your hours, address, phone number or business name differ between your website, Google, Yelp, Apple Maps, Bing Places and industry directories, the AI sees conflicting facts and may skip you entirely. Audit every listing and make them identical.
Are your competitors already doing this?
Some are. Purpose-built AI tools now help local businesses optimize their listings, prompt timely reviews, and appear in answers from ChatGPT and Gemini. The window to be first in your area is open — but it won't stay open forever.
Frequently asked questions
Does ChatGPT use Google Business Profile?
Not in the way Google does. That's why you need presence beyond Google: your website, directories, reviews across platforms, and local press.
Does Apple Maps matter?
Yes. Claim and update Apple Business Connect and Bing Places along with Google.
How do I know if ChatGPT recommends me?
Ask it the questions your customers ask, in a fresh chat, several times. See post 10 for a simple testing method.
